FRESH from being named Sainsbury’s Regional Supplier of the Year, Scottish family butcher Simon Howie has been short listed in this year’s Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards.

The Sainsbury’s award was won on the basis of Simon Howie’s sales growth and successful new product launches, as well as the company’s management and reliability of delivery at key seasonal events.

The shortlisting in the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards, meanwhile, follows the culmination of a rigorous judging process that saw judges taste 121 food and drink products and examine submissions from 100 businesses across Scotland.

Simon Howie said: “We are delighted to be named Sainsbury’s Regional Supplier of the Year, particularly as we were up against suppliers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

“As a company, we enjoy a productive collaborative working relationship with Sainsbury’s and recently had a tremendous response from customers to the introduction of our premium range which helped add value to Sainsbury’s breakfast category.

“We are also pleased to be short listed in the ‘red, white and game’ category of the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards, which recognises the quality of our range across this category.

“The award win and the short listing are the latest welcome news in what has been a tremendous year for the company to date. Following a fantastic start to the year, when our haggis products proved particularly popular on Burn’s Night, we launched a couple of new product lines which have gone on to win national listings that are helping us win market share.”

The relationship between Sainsbury’s and Simon Howie Butchers dates back to 1999 as part of a local supplier development programme, when Simon Howie began supplying haggis to the retailer. The butcher now has over 20 product lines listed with Sainsbury’s, some distributed nationally.

Writer, broadcaster and all-round goodie, Hardeep Singh Kohli, will host the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards in Edinburgh on May 30th at a ceremony organised by Scotland Food & Drink in partnership with The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS).
