MODERN Apprentice (MA), Ross McMillan, has scooped the prestigious Vocational Qualifications (VQ) Learner of the Year award for Scotland – the second year running that a Forth Valley College student has lifted the top prize.

Ross (22) from Tillicoultry recently qualified as a chef having worked at the Stirling Management Centre and studied, supervised by Forth Valley College lecturers, for the past four years to complete his MA.

He was presented with his award by FVC Associate Principal Business and Innovation Colette Filippi at a lunch held at the Gallery Training restaurant at the Stirling Campus.

Last year, former FVC MA student Kyle Wilson (20) from Crossgates near Cowdenbeath – who now works as a fully-qualified Mechanical Technician at Longannet Power Station – won the very same award.

Ross said: “I could not believe it when I was told I had won this award, in fact I did not even know I had been nominated for it. It feels really great to have won and is another one for the mantelpiece.

“I would just like to thank the Stirling Management Centre and Sodexo for their faith in me and I am delighted to be working with such a great team.

“The support I have received over the last few years from the Forth Valley College staff has been fantastic as well and I am indebted to them.

“I would definitely recommend the college to anyone thinking about studying for an MA and would encourage people leaving school to see what a modern apprenticeship has to offer.”

Forth Valley College associate principal, Colette Filippi, said: “Ross is a dedicated and highly motivated young man who has completed his Vocational Qualification (VQ) with Stirling Management Centre.

“He has always demonstrated a great passion for cookery and his talent has been recognised with various awards during his training.

“He is a well-respected member of the Stirling Management Centre kitchen brigade and both the staff and management are extremely proud of his achievements.

“He continues to develop his talent and is now passing on this experience and knowledge to school pupils on placements and other students working towards professional cookery qualifications. He is an asset to his employers and we are confident he will continue to succeed in his career.”

Al Thom, general manager at Stirling Management Centre, said: “We are obviously delighted for Ross in winning this award. It highlights what can be achieved when organisations such as Sodexo and Forth Valley College work together. I hope that this inspires more youngsters to get involved in schemes such as this.”
