MASTER chef and artist, Domenico Crolla, proprietor of Bella Napoli on the southside of Glasgow, has unveiled his latest pizza art creation: a portrait of Andy Warhol to mark the Scottish Parliament’s forthcoming exhibition of works by the iconic US pop artist.
Domenico Crolla’s utterly unique pizza portraits has seen him depict a series of celebrities on pizza toppings – including The Pope, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and singer Rihanna – and it was Warhol himself who gave him the idea.
Domenico said: “It was Warhol’s striking monochrome printing technique that was the initial inspiration for my celebrity pizza portraits so it makes sense that Warhol himself should feature on one of my pizzas.”
But the Warhol connection with Domenico goes deeper than a thin crust pizza; he was recently commissioned by art dealer Jean Bernard to create a pizza portrait of his wife to be displayed alongside Warhol’s original painting in his Miami art gallery.
“Jean’s wife is Debra Arman, muse to Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, so it was a great honour to get this opportunity to depict her portrait in pizza to be displayed alongside the work of the artist who inspired me in the first place.”
Portraits of the Queen, Lenin, Mao Tse-Tung and Andrew Carnegie are among the works that will go on show at the Warhol exhibition at Holyrood from October 5 until November 3.
Meanwhile, demand for Domenico’s pizza art has been such that plans are now in place for his pizza portraits to be depicted across a range of products, from t-shirts and aprons to mugs and mouse mats, where they could soon be seen sitting alongside Warhol’s famous celebrity portraits.
