A LEADING North-east organics recycling firm has won two contracts with Aberdeenshire Council worth a combined six-figure sum.
Keenan Recycling, based at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, which transforms food and garden waste into compost, has secured contracts with the council to recycle waste from public buildings and households.
The first is to collect food waste from approximately 60 local authority-owned properties across Aberdeenshire, including primary and secondary schools, and council buildings. The second is to recycle food waste collected by the council from all the households in Aberdeenshire.
The organics recycling company currently works with more than 600 businesses across the North-east and Inverness to help them to divert food waste away from landfill, processing in excess of 50,000 tonnes of waste per year at the award-winning £5m facility.
Once the council’s new services are fully implemented across the area, the contracts will see Keenans process an additional 8,000 tonnes of food waste per year.
Managing director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan, said: “We are delighted to have won these contracts and look forward to working closely with Aberdeenshire Council to help deliver a world class service. The contracts will help increase recycling rates and create an additional five jobs.
“They will also help our farming customers greatly as the need for agricultural compost has been so high throughout the year, and the additional 8000 tonnes of waste will help us meet demand.”
