Media Release: Glasgow Clyde College launches student radio station with Radio Clyde

GLASGOW Clyde College is delighted to announce the launch of its new student-run radio station, GCR (Glasgow Clyde Radio).

The station, run in partnership with the city’s iconic Radio Clyde, will begin broadcasting at 10am today (Tuesday March 4). Run by students and staff and based at the college’s Cardonald Campus, it will feature a variety of student-produced programmes covering news, current affairs, music and entertainment.

A truly student-led project, the name of the station and its logo were created through student engagement competitions.

HND Media and Communication student, William Candlish, was the winner of the ‘name the station’ competition.

William said: “I liked the idea of using initials and the strong sound of the ‘R’ at the end. I never thought I’d win so I was really surprised and delighted.

“As a media student, I’m excited about the launch of the station. I’m going to be interviewing the Principal for a pre-recorded show that will be broadcast on launch day. Working on the station is going to be brilliant experience.”

The station’s stylish logo was designed by HND Practical Journalism student, Catrina Cochrane, from Mount Florida. A keen blogger and web designer, Catrina’s design impressed the team of college judges.

Catrina said: “I came across the competition on the student intranet and thought I would give it a go. My design was inspired by students and is funky, bold and bright.

“I was ecstatic when I found out I had won. It’s been great to see my logo around the college campuses and, as a journalism student, I’m excited about the opportunity to work on the station.”

GCR will broadcast four hours of student-produced content each day. On launch day, there will be a live interview with the college principal, Susan Walsh, as well as a pre-recorded interview with Mrs Walsh. Mike Russell, Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, will join the One o’clock Show for a live chat.

Alex McCluskey, director of Creative and Cultural Industries, said that the college’s Journalism and Media students will benefit hugely from the station.

“The radio partnership with Bauer Media is an excellent opportunity for our students to develop their broadcasting and technical skills in a professional environment,” he said.

“It will provide that valuable experience in presenting, developing programming, reporting and newsgathering that employers in the media are looking for, and that will benefit them hugely when they graduate.”

Katerina Pansera, a radio graduate from Montreal, Canada, will assist the students in the running of the station as deputy station manager. She joined the GCR team on an internship as part of a programme sponsored by the Quebec Government – the first time they have sponsored an intern in a non-francophone country.

Katerina said: “It’s a really exciting project to be a part of. The more practical broadcasting experience we give students, the more prepared they’ll be for jobs in the media once they graduate.

“I’ve worked at CKUT 90.3 FM in Quebec for three years. I’m trying to bring the good elements that I’ve learned there over to GCR but also recognising the fact that this is really about giving the students the opportunity to be as professional as possible and to go straight into careers after Glasgow Clyde College.

“I’m looking forward to helping the students and staff get the most out of it.”

The station will broadcast between 10am and 2pm daily. Listeners can tune in live via www.glasgowclyde.ac.uk and the Tunein radio app.
