Call to action from athletes to get tickets and cheer them at the Scottish Gas National Open Swimming Championships on 3 – 6 April which is now only two weeks away!

OVER 740 athletes, representing over 90 clubs, have registered to compete at the Scottish Gas National Open Swimming Championships at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 April 2014.

With the event doubling as a selection meet for Team Scotland the elite of Scottish swimming talent will be in action, including Olympic silver medallist, Michael Jamieson; world champion, Hannah Miley; and fellow Olympians, Robbie Renwick, Caitlin McClatchey and Craig Benson.

With only three Team Scotland places available for each individual event, finals are set to provide some thrilling racing, not least of all in the breaststroke events.

Speaking at a training session in Edinburgh Craig Benson of Warrender Baths Club spoke about his preparation and what he hopes for at the event.

He said: “There are a lot of us in the mix for only three Team Scotland places. It’s no longer about the qualifying time either as many of us are already under it so know that’s achievable, for me it is now about the race itself and finishing in the top three. My race strategy needs to be just right.

“I had a bit of a ropey start to the season but with the help of the team from the sportscotland Institute of Sport, I’ve changed my programme and in the last month my training has been the best I’ve ever done so I’m feeling good, I’m feeling confident.”

Benson also requested lots of noisy support from the Tollcross crowd at the Scottish Championships.

“This is going to be a taster event for all the athletes too so I would want as many people as we can to come along and support us at what is our biggest event of the year out with the summer Games themselves. That extra bit of support can provide those extra 0.10 seconds needed to make the team.”

This sentiment was echoed by Edinburgh University’s Kathryn Johnstone, another breaststroke specialist who will be looking for her second consecutive Team Scotland place.

She said: “I want to hear cheering, lots of noise and plenty of atmosphere at Tollcross. Every athlete in every race needs support and encouragement to help them achieve their goal, so it’s important to us that as many people come along to the event and support us.”

Tickets from as low as £4 for individual heats and £6 for finals can be bought online now at www.ticketmaster.co.uk/scottishswimming or by phone to 08444 999 990.
