Media Release: Film promotes Shetland as the place to be for oil and gas

A PROMOTIONAL film has just been released showing why Shetland is ‘bucking the oil price uncertainty’ with continued success in offshore oil and gas developments.

The film was developed by Liz Musser from Promote Shetland on behalf of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Shetland Islands Council.

Professional film maker Liz moved to Shetland from America to develop the film for Promote Shetland, a team tasked by the Shetland Amenity Trust which is contracted by Shetland Islands Council to promote Shetland to the world.

Says a spokesperson: “The Power from the North campaign promotes Shetland’s capabilities in oil and gas, decommissioning and renewables. The film was produced and edited wholly in the isles and highlights both Shetland’s half-century of experience and cutting edge facilities.

“The film shows the vast activity in Lerwick Harbour and illustrates the Port Authority’s commitment to expansion and development for future needs, and the importance of Sullom Voe to North Sea oil and gas production – past, present and future.

“BP is planning a major expansion at the site, including construction of a gas treatment plant. Total’s Laggan-Tormore gas plant project is set for completion by the end of September.

“Shetland’s fantastic geographical advantages when it comes to offshore servicing, supply and decommissioning are reinforced by the excellence of sea and air connections, local engineering infrastructure and the availability of superfast broadband.”

Katrina Wiseman, head of regional developments for HIE in Shetland, said: “The launch is timely during a time of low oil prices and we were very keen to develop this project and to promote that Shetland has a vibrant, flexible and collaborative international oil and gas industry delivering cost effective and innovative solutions.

“This is a product that can be used on websites, at trade shows and as part of presentations to deliver that message to industry to encourage business and inward investment.”

Andy Steven, head of brand strategy at Promote Shetland, said Shetland’s energy capabilities were potent engines for economic development in the isles.

He said: “Shetland has more than 50 years of experience in dealing with the biggest offshore developments in the most challenging conditions, in the Northern North Sea and the North Atlantic. We’re ready, willing and able to tackle all that’s still to come.

“This film shows where we are, how we can achieve that and why Shetland truly is the place to be.”

Alastair Cooper, chair of the SIC Development Committee, said: “Shetland has been at the forefront of oil and gas related activity in the North Sea for the past 40 years.

“Our location in the heart of existing and emerging oil and gas fields means our islands offer a strategically important base for the industry, complemented by a highly skilled local workforce who understand the needs of the industry and know exactly how to service those needs efficiently and cost-effectively.

“We’ve a lot to be proud of here, and this film shows why Shetland will remain at the heart of the industry for decades to come”.
