MA course offering working journalists skills upgrade option

WORKING hacks can polish and upgrade their skills with a new post-graduate qualification from Edinburgh Napier University.

The MA International Journalism for Media Professionals is aimed at journalists, editors and any media sector creatives who want to advance their careers, learn new skills or increase their international employability.

The programme emphasises the increasingly global nature of the media, and is primarily taught via distance learning that encourages international networking among the students.

The degree will cover subjects such as leadership and entrepreneurship in the media and cross-platform journalism and media practice, modules that are available to sit independently of the course proper.

Rachel Dungar, programme leader for the MA, told allmediascotland.com: “The journalism community is facing challenging times. The global economic crisis is still affecting job security, technological advances require innovative approaches to production, and the evolving political situation in some parts of the world is providing journalists with the opportunity to participate in constructing new national futures.

“The School of Arts and Creative Industries is launching a new Masters specifically tailored to meet the requirements of modern journalists and media professionals.

“‘MA International Journalism for Media Professionals’ will provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership attributes, to explore innovative forms of media practice, to enhance their global mobility and to expand the scope of their professional expertise.”

The first semester begins on September 5 and for Scottish students is offered at the same price as any masters programme, though that price has yet to be confirmed.
