Thirty-one Jobs at Risk as Herald and Evening Times Cut Street Vending Sites

More than 30 jobs are at risk after The Herald and Evening Times announced plans to cut the number of street vendors selling papers.

The Newsquest-owned titles insisted the revised vending operation was necessary to meet “changing social and commuting trends”.

However, it remains unclear which specific Glasgow-based sites are to be scrapped under the plans.

In a memo seen by allmediascotland, Herald and Times managing director, Tim Blott, is quoted as saying: “The company is revising arrangements for street vending sales in Glasgow of The Herald and Evening Times to focus on retail sales and home deliveries.

“We will maintain key sites in the city centre which generate meaningful revenue but close others. Some 31 vending jobs are at risk.

“The group's newspaper division, like other British media companies, routinely reviews operations to boost those that are profitable while seeking efficiencies from those that are not.

“Changing social and commuting trends means we have to adapt our business to meet our customer preferences.

“The revised vending operation will still remain one of the largest operations of its kind in the country.”

Asked about the move, a spokesperson for The Herald & Times Group added: “We will maintain key kiosk sites in the city centre which generate meaningful revenue but close others.”
