The Media in Figures: National newspaper sales in Scotland

THE Daily Telegraph has enjoyed a year-on-year increase in its average daily sale in Scotland.

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the paper’s average sale in Scotland was 17,345 during December 2012 and an average 17,394 last month – representing a 0.3 per cent increase, year-on-year.

The i newspaper also enjoyed a year-on-year increase: from 18,214 to 18,409.

In summary, the daily newspapers figures concern sales in Scotland between December 2012 and last month and reveal the following:

Daily Mirror – 13.5 per cent drop = from 20,293 on average during December 2012, to 17,545 last month;

Daily Record – ten per cent drop = from 240,120 on average during December 2012 last year, to 216,088 last month;

Daily Star of Scotland – 10.2 per cent drop = 51,676 to 46,391;

The Scottish Sun – ten per cent drop = 276,154 to 248,459;

Scottish Daily Express – 4.8 per cent drop = 55,349 to 52,698;

Scottish Daily Mail – 8.9 per cent drop = 101,810 to 92,754;

Daily Telegraph – 0.3 per cent up = 17,345 to 17,394;

Financial Times – 13.9 per cent drop = 2,796 to 2,407;

The Guardian – 8.5 per cent drop = 11,239 to 10,280;

i – 1.1 per cent up = 18,214 to 18,409;

Independent – 13.8 per cent drop = 3,253 to 2,804;

The Times – 1.9 per cent drop = 18,508 to 18,105.

Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:

Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 15.1 per cent down = 30,368 to 25,782;

The Scottish Sun – Sunday – 8.8 per cent down = 197,319 to 179,781;

Sunday Mail – ten per cent down = 274,238 to 246,719;

Sunday Mirror – 13.1 per cent down = 19,802 to 17,211;

The People – 17.6 per cent down = 11,193 to 9,228;

Scottish Sunday Express – 9.4 per cent down = 32,835 to 29,751;

The Sunday Post – 11.1 per cent drop = 176,265 to 156,695;

Scottish Mail on Sunday – 5.4 per cent down = 87,286 to 82,601;

Independent on Sunday – 24.3 per cent down = 6,681 to 5,056;

The Observer – 4.9 per cent down = 14,850 to 14,119;

Sunday Telegraph – 2.2 per cent down = 15,689 to 15,346; and

Sunday Times – 6.9 per cent down = 48,048 to 44,743.
