New arts journalism course to use Edinburgh Festivals as training ground

AN arts journalism course is to launch in Edinburgh this year, using the capital’s many festivals as a training ground for aspiring arts writers, including critics.

The course – being run by media consultancy, Curio Media – is to last for ten weeks, between June 28 and September 2.

Its organisers believe it is the first of its type in the UK. There is a fee involved in taking part.

The course includes five weeks of intensive training, guest speakers and industry experts and five weeks of practical work experience. The course was devised by web editor, Mark Johnstone, and theatre director, EJ Trivett.

Says Johnstone: “This is a truly unique and highly innovative course, perfect for anyone interested in working as a critic or writing news for the arts scene. We are the UK’s only dedicated provider of arts journalism training, which shows there is a clear gap in the market.”

During the second half of the course, attendees will run Curiofestival.com, a news site dedicated to reporting Edinburgh’s festivals, taking it in turns to handle reviewing, sub-editing, multimedia production and interacting with readers online.

Adds Johnstone: “Basic journalism skills are covered, but the course, which has 30 places and is the first run by Curio Media, is intended for journalists looking to move into arts journalism or to develop this specialism.”

The course fee is £2495.
