Orkney Today facing closure

THE winner of the Newspaper of the Year title at the most recent Highlands and Islands Media Awards is set to be closed down.

Seven years after its founding, Orkney Today is said to be a victim of the tough financial climate. A sister title of the 156 year-old Orcadian newspaper, nine staff – five of them editorial – are now entering a period of consultation over their futures.

Published on a Thursday, future editions are expected to be produced over the consultation period.

The editorial staff comprise editor, Catherine Turnbull; chief reporter, Robert Leslie and reporters Craig Taylor and Victoria Rhodes. Plus trainee reporter, Andrew Hamilton.

Compared to 9,300 average circulation of The Orcadian, Orkney Today sells 4800 copies. Both titles are owned by Orkney Media Group.

News of its proposed closure was announced today on its website.
