Student journalists have a rare opportunity to mix with their professional counterparts later this month when the NUJ's Edinburgh Freelance branch holds an informal networking evening.
Taking place a fortnight on Monday, it will be – say the organisers – “a chance for students to chat to some of Scotland's leading journalists over a pint or two”.
Among those present will be Scotsman columnist Joyce McMillan, Sunday Herald environment editor Rob Edwards, former BBC producer Pete Murray, photographer Nick McGowan-Lowe and feature writer Jackie Kemp. The evening is being organised in collaboration with the NUJ's Edinburgh and District branch.
Says Edinburgh Freelance branch secretary, Mark Fisher: “We had a similar event earlier in the year and it proved to be one of our most successful ever meetings. It shows there's a real appetite among a new generation of journalists to come into the industry. We're pleased to be able to let them know the NUJ is there for them as they make the transition into professional journalism.”
