THE Dundee newspapers, comics and magazines publisher, DC Thomson, is celebrating some year-on-year circulation increases.
Says the Audit Bureau of Circulation – in its six-monthly ‘consumer magazines’ review – The People’s Friend, Animals for You and Jacqueline Wilson registered increases of 0.1 per cent, 15 per cent and one per cent, respectively.
Some DC Thomson figures were down (see here), but a company statement here preferred to accentuate the positive.

A COMMUNITY, not-for-profit radio station is seeking to raise its profile by hosting four music gigs in Glasgow.
Pulse 98.4 – which operates out of Barrhead, in East Renfrewshire – has three bands on the bill for its first gig, on the 20th of next month.

A COMPETITION celebrating the best of farming and rural affairs journalism in regional newspapers is seeking entries – reports the website, holdthefrontpage.
Says the website: “The Stuart Seaton Award is run by the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists to recognise consistently high-quality reporting by the regional press on rural issues.”

A MSP has been reportedly racially abused while lending support to an initiative to highlight the magazine, The Big Issue.
Says Third Force News – the newspaper of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations – Humza Yousaf was told by a passer-by to “fuck off back home”.
Yousaf was among guest several sellers of the magazine, in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as part of a celebration last week – reported here – of ‘street newspapers’ around the world, helping to lift people out of homelessness and poverty.

A GLOBAL index of Press freedom has placed the UK at No.33, down three places on last year.
The index is produced by the organisation, Reporters Without Borders. Top for Press freedom, says RWB, is Finland. The USA is placed 46th.
Says The Guardian newspaper’s report of the figures: “The campaign group cites government intimidation of The Guardian over its surveillance investigation as a factor in the fall.”
