Your Noon Briefing: Paris massacres, local radio, etc

AMONG the widespread media coverage of the terrible events in Paris on Friday evening, the Sunday Herald elected to reproduce, on its front page, a harrowing photograph, from one of the locations where people lay dead.

Under the headline, France at War, the caption read: ‘The Sunday Herald knows this is a disturbing image, but we feel it must be shown to reflect the reality of terrorism’.

AND in sister title, The Herald’s Saturday magazine, this time an article by Brian Beacom, that begins: “When independent local radio arrived in Scotland in 1974, its USP was its innovative localness, a broadcasting world away from the London voice of the BBC.

“The new homegrown presenters were immediately adopted by listeners and the likes of Tiger Tim Stevens on Radio Clyde, Eddie Mair on Radio Tay and Nicky Campbell on Northsound became like family.

“But these days you could be coming home to find a complete stranger in your living room, or even a rather incongruous former TV presenter talking to you while you’re in the shower.”

A DOCUMENTARY marking the 50th anniversary of the Forth Road Bridge – made by a regular allmediascotland.com columnist, Maurice Smith – has this evening been named among the winners at annual awards run by the Scottish division of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

The Bridge: Fifty Years Across the Forth took the Single Documentary title.

“Robert Taylor has stepped down as editor of the Inverness Courier after nine years in the position.”

FIVE newspapers serving Ayrshire are to be restructured with the creation of a group editor and two group content editor roles, but with three editorships and a deputy editorship at risk of redundancy.

The papers are part of the portfolio of newspapers acquired by Newsquest following its purchase in May of the Romanes Media Group.

Two photographer roles and a freelance sub-editor role are also at risk.

The newspaper titles involved are the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald, Ayr Advertiser, Cumnock Chronicle, Irvine Times and the Largs & Millport Weekly News.

REPORTS radiotoday.co.uk: “Bauer has moved current employees, Phil Manzor and Michael McCrae, to content controller positions.

“Phil Manzor will become content controller for Tay FM based in Dundee, moving on from his current position as Forth One content controller.

“And Michael McCrae joins the team at Forth as content controller, based in Edinburgh. Michael has previously held the position of head of presentation at Real Radio in Glasgow for GMG, and is currently producer of Buaer City 1’s Scotland-wide Sunday morning show Ewan and Cat.”
