‘The Great Scottish BAKO-Cake-Off’ competitors announced and Ruth Davidson MSP is set to take on the challenge

SCOTTISH Bakers, the association which represents the interests of bakers across Scotland, will be holding its 127th Annual Conference and Awards Weekend on 4th and 5th May at The Crowne Plaza in Glasgow and, as is now customary, Saturday’s programme will get off to a ‘sticky’ start.

Scottish Bakers’ Ambassador and world renowned couture-cake-queen, Mich Turner MBE, who is hosting the conference, will be putting some hungry competitors through their paces to mark the opening of the annual event.

Five competitors will take to the stage to take part in a ‘Generation Game-style BAKO cake off’ on Saturday morning and Keynote speaker, MSP and leader of the Scottish Conservative party, Ruth Davidson MSP, will be joining Dan Harrison, Steve Hill, Amy Miles and Tracey Reid to decorate a couture cake to Mich’ exacting standards.

“As a sector we are always up bright and early and what better a way to start the day than with a bit of healthy competition,” commented Mich. “Annd with these competitors, I am expecting some real creativity and a professional touch on the stage on Saturday 5th May. I will be giving expert tuition and I expect my lead to be followed with some great cake designs as a result. Let’s hope that all our guests are up to the challenge!”

Scottish Baker of the Year 2018 to be announced in Glasgow on 5th May

Scottish Bakers are all set to announce the winner of the Scottish bakery sector’s most coveted prize at 2200hrs on Saturday 5th May at The Crowne Plaza.

Join us for what promises to be a glittering evening as some 40 of the nation’s favourite bakers find out if their products will take centre stage and if they will be named Scottish Baker of the Year 2018.

Some 850 of the nations’ favourite morning rolls, scones, individual cakes, savouries, biscuits, breads and new category, celebration cakes were scored on appearance, freshness and taste by a panel of some 50 industry experts who have whittled down the best bakes in Scotland to just one ultimate winner from each category. And the winner of each product category was then in the running for the ultimate crown – the title of Scottish Baker of the Year 2018.

The Scottish Baker of the Year Awards, which features Michelle McManus at the helm and couture cake queen Mich Turner MBE as its ambassador, is the brainchild of Scottish Bakers, the Trade Association for bakers in Scotland who decided to search for the best baker in the land in 2012.

The competition celebrates our love of a tasty treat from our local baker and aims to crown just one hard working bakery Scottish Baker of the Year.

Scottish Bakers asked customers across Scotland to vote for their favourite bakery items in the following categories: morning roll, scone, individual cake, savoury, biscuit, bread and new category, celebration cake.

And the overall winner will be crowned Scottish Baker of the Year!

“This is my first year at the helm of the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards and it has been a real treat, not just for the taste buds but for the eye too,” says Scottish Bakers’ chief executive, Alasdair Smith. “Judging day was incredible, the creativity on show was superb, especially in our new category, celebration cake. I am intrigued to find out who the judges have awarded prizes to, I really do not know! And I am excited to be sharing the news with the winners at a glittering gala dinner.”

“This competition is based on real votes from real customers, so it really is a huge honour to be in with a change of taking a prize. I wish all our entrants who have come this far well on the day,” commented Craig McPhie, president of Scottish Bakers and himself a successful baker.
