SCOTTISH Bakers has today opened the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards 2022/3 – to butchers, bakers and all pie-makers for entrants keen to put their perfect pies to the test in this long-running yet always hotly-contested competition.

With a nip in the air after a long hot summer, what better time to start the search for the best pies in production than when we are all looking for warming flavour-filled treats and traditional savoury snacks, including the ever-popular Scotch Pie?

In addition to Scotch pies, registered food businesses including bakers, butchers and other pie-makers are invited to enter products across 11 categories, including; Scotch Pie, Football Pies & Savouries, Macaroni Pie, Steak Pie, Sausage Roll, Cold Savoury, Hot Savoury, Vegetarian Savoury, Haggis Savoury, Bridie and Apple Pies.

Entries are due in by 31st October and products must be delivered to Carnegie Conference Centre, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline, KY11 8DY between 9.00am and 11.00am on 16th November 2022 for judging.

The competition offers proud pie producers across Scotland and from further afield the opportunity to be recognised as producers of the highest-quality savoury products on the market, with awards given to the best products in each category.

The winner of the Scotch Pie category will be declared WORLD CHAMPION.

The competition aims to highlight the humble pie in all its forms and the skill demonstrated in creating such high quality pastry products. Recognising the ‘great and the good’ in this way rewards the commitment of pie producers and raises the bar in the industry.

Says Alasdair Smith, chief executive of Scottish Bakers, which manages the competition: “We are delighted to be launching the World Scotch Pie Championships for 2022/3.

“We have a huge number of hard working butchers, bakers and other pie makers who have shown their mettle in recent years and who I know will be itching to share their perfect pies with our judges who will put each one through their paces before selecting the best in category and ultimately the best Scotch Pie in the World.

“I wish all our entrants good luck.”

Entrants can sign up at www.scotchpieawards.com

The winner will be announced at a prestigious awards lunch on 24th January 2023 at the Westerwood Hotel, Cumbernauld by TV personality and long-term pie award presenter, Carol Smillie.

She said: “I am so delighted to be back on board with the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards. The world may have changed, but our love of pies most definitely has not! It’s such a fun day celebrating the skills of so many butchers, bakers and other pie makers who kept the nation’s spirits up with our best loved dish.”
