Media release: Visitors, Brazil, raise a dram to win over Scottish side

EMPLOYEES at Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky and premium gin business of Pernod Ricard, conceded a narrow defeat from one of the world’s greatest footballing nations last week, after a thrilling game at the home of Strathspey Thistle FC, in Grantown on Spey.

The Scottish side, which was made up of staff from the company’s distilleries and warehouses in Speyside, and its site at Kilmalid, Dunbartonshire, took on a formidable opponent in the form of sister company, Pernod Ricard Brazil.

After an even first half ended 1-1, the visitors, who are responsible for selling Chivas Brothers’ Scotch whisky brands including Chivas Regal, The Glenlivet and Ballantine’s in Brazil, took advantage of the hot weather with a 5-4 lead at the final whistle.

The visiting team was part of a 146-strong delegation that had traveled to Scotland for their annual conference, staying in Aviemore. While on-site the guests were also taken through the Scotch whisky making process.

Team manager and Chivas Brothers commercial director for Heritage, Douglas Callander, said: “It was a fantastic game, played in front of a passionate Brazilian crowd. The visiting side’s finesse and passing style was evident and collided with the Scots’ direct strength.

“In the end, the Brazilians edged it and celebrated wildly on the final whistle. Chivas Brothers can hold their heads high, however, after running one of the world’s greatest footballing nations close.”

Scotland last played Brazil on the opening day of the 1998 World Cup in France.

They didn’t fare much better that day losing 2-1, while Brazil made it all the way to the final before losing out to the host nation.
