The category for the best pie available for supporters to buy at a Scottish football match was introduced last year in recognition of the huge importance these hearty snacks play in the fans enjoyment of the ‘beautiful game’.

The Forres Mechanics’ Steak Pie took top slot for Murdoch’s Butchers last year but this time Brownings and Irvines have come out top.

The World Scotch Pie Championships provides butchers and bakers across Scotland with the opportunity to become recognised for producing the highest quality savoury products with awards given to those producing the best products in each category.

The winner of the Scotch Pie category will be declared as the WORLD CHAMPION on 15th January 2014 at an Awards Lunch in Dunfermline.

Head judge, Robert Ross, said: “The competition, which has run for 15 years, aims to highlight that bakers and butchers create high quality artisan pastry products.

“Recognising the ‘great and the good’ in this way rewards excellence and raises the bar in the industry.

“With more entries than ever before and the bar set incredibly high, we had a hard job on our hands but we are confident we have made the right decision.”

Douglas Scott of SMTF, who presented the awards, said: “We had a record amount of products at this year’s judging day and the standard was higher than ever too.

“We have a huge number of hard working butchers and bakers who deserve recognition for delivering great products day in and day out.

“I am confident that the judges have made the right decisions and I would like to offer our two worthy winners and three clubs huge congratulations on their achievements.”

The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders. Both trade associations actively support and promote bakers and butchers in Scotland by encouraging and sharing best practise.

Winners will be announced on 15th January at Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline.

The competition is sponsored by wholesaler to the food industry, Bako Northern and Scotland. http://www.bakoscotland.co.uk/
