Media Release: The Scottish public has had its say, now it’s time for the professionals to put the best-baked goods in the land to the taste test

PHOTOCALL notice – diary note

THE Scottish Baker of the Year 2014 judging day will take place at Carnegie Conference Centre, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline, KY11 8DY with a photocall between 2.00pm and 3.00pm on Wednesday 2nd April 2014.

Customers from across Scotland have been voting for their favorite bakery products across six categories and on 2nd April, the bakers of the most popular products will be invited to deliver their customers’ favorites for scrutiny by a panel of expert and independent judges.

We are expecting hundreds of the excellent scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits made by artisan bakers and our judges, led by head judge Robert Ross, will have a long day ahead.

TV judge and celebrity cake designer, Mich Turner MBE, who will be presenting the awards which will be announced in May, said: “The judges have a hard task ahead but I have been really impressed with the quality and creativity Scottish bakers are demonstrating and I look forward to being surprised and delighted when I announce the winners in Glasgow.”

Last year, the competition received some 15,000 votes with over 200 bakers recognised and this year the competition organiser, Scottish Bakers, are hoping even more people will log on and vote to help celebrate the achievements of the 12,000 people who work in bakeries up and down the land.

2013 winner, Andre Sarafilovic, of craft bakery and family-owned business, Stephens Bakery, said: “Since winning, our business has gone from strength to strength and we have been able to share our success with all of our customers by continuing to provide the best baked goods day in and day out.”

Scottish Bakers was established in 1891 and since then have represented and promoted the interests of the bakery trade in Scotland. They aim to be an integral part of each member’s business by providing support for bakers of all sizes.

They provide a valuable source of help, advice, information, assistance and skills development for bakers throughout Scotland. Most importantly, Scottish Bakers belongs to its members and exist for their benefit.

They are proud of their motto, ‘for the good of all’.

We will be hosting a photocall and interviews with judges between 2.00pm and 3.00pm with our judges – join us and pick up a GOODY BAG for the journey home!
