INTERESTING tale behind the Daily Record and The Scottish Sun’s coverage of a celebrity boxing match in Glasgow’s Marriott hotel on Sunday night when former MSP, Tommy Sheridan, tried to go toe-to-toe with ex-footballer, Roddy Collins, brother of Irish world champion, Steve.
The event was sponsored by The Scottish Sun, as the pads on each corner post proudly displayed.
But the organisers perhaps did not realise the ‘niceties’ of Scotland’s tabloid wars when they invited a guest boxing correspondent to interview former Old Firm rivals, Graham Roberts and Frank McAvennie, in the ring at the start of the proceedings.
It was none other than Hugh Keevins of the Daily Record.
Hugh also raised a laugh when he interviewed Gordon Smith, new chef executive of the Scottish Football Association, who had been Sheridan’s original opponent but was then required to step down, on his new appointment.
Trying to charm the press, Smith was abruptly halted by Keevins: “We made you, we can destroy you,” said the Record man.
