On this day, in 1661, Scotland’s first newspaper, Mercurius Caledonius, was reportedly published for the first time.
Says The Scotsman: “It promised coverage of the ‘the Affairs now in Agitation in Scotland, with a Survey of Foreign Intelligence’, but ceased on 28 March, after only nine issues.”
Its name is celebrated in the website, www.caldonianmercury.com, which includes an article on previous incarnations of the title.
