Anti-dog fouling campaign earns Scots local authority an UK-wide PR awards shortlising

AN anti-dog fouling campaign has earned a Scots local authority a shortlising in an UK-wide competition celebrating the best of public relations.

West Dunbartonshire Council’s ‘Do the Right Thing’ campaign has been nominated in this year’s Excellence Awards run by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

It is in the running for a prize in the Public Sector category.

Says the council, in a media statement: “The three-month initiative achieved high levels of public awareness and community support, as well as a 49 per cent increase in satisfaction with the council on this issue. The campaign used original messages to make irresponsible owners feel embarrassed and uncomfortable, and engaged residents by allowing them to influence decisions such as where 20 new litter bins should be located to encourage disposal.”

The entry will now go up against NHS North West, Southwark Council, The Red Consultancy & NHS Blood and Transplant, Translink and West Midlands Police. The council’s communications team won the Internal Publication of the Year category at the CIPR PRide Scotland Awards last year.

Meanwhile, in these upcoming CIPR Excellence Awards, Glasgow Housing Association’s Think Yes campaign gets ‘a nod’ in the Internal Communications Campaign category while the Scottish office of the National Autistic Society has been shortlisted in the Not-for-Profit category for its Count Us In campaign.

And a collaboration between Stripe Communications and the Scottish Government – Alcohol Behaviour Change 2013 – is nominated in Health Campaign category.

The awards ceremony is taking place on June 3.
